Person of Interest
Feb. 5th, 2012 01:53 amI'd been intending to check out Person of Interest ever since I first heard about it but it conflicted with a few other shows on at the same time (the darn DVR needs at least one more tuner, c'mon! :P ;) ) and so I never got around checking it out at CBS' site.
But several Person of Interest vids have come through LVI recently and they renewed my interest in it (Official Copyright Holders, please take note of how that happened. Fanvids = me wanting to watch your show, ergo fanvids are GOOD. You should embrace vids and welcome them as the amazing free advertising that they are! ;) ). Especially since that means that now I want to vid your show, therefore, I will be buying your DVD set when it's available in addition to tuning in AND in turn giving your show some good word of mouth. VIDS = WIN/WIN for us all, doncha know? ♥! ;)
Sadly, I've missed most of the early eps now and CBS' site only has as, at this moment, eps 8, 11, 12 and 13. I caught ep 7 before it fell off to make room for 13, which just aired this past Thursday. However, it was ep 11, "Super" that hooked me liek woah.
So, under the cut, let me share some *squee* with you and who knows? Maybe you'll be interested enough to check it out, too? ;) That is, if you're not already watching, of course! ♥!

Michael Emerson as Harold Finch and Jim Caviezel as John Reese.

Taraji P. Henson as Detective Carter.
PERSON OF INTEREST stars Jim Caviezel, Emmy Award winner Michael Emerson and Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson in a crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent, Reese, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire, Finch, to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese's special training in covert operations appeals to Finch, a software genius who invented a program that uses pattern recognition to identify people about to be involved in violent crimes. Using state-of-the-art surveillance technology, the two work outside of the law, using Reese's adept skills and Finch's unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the "person of interest" and stop the crime before it happens. Reese's actions draw the attention of the NYPD, including homicide detective Carter, and Fusco, a cop whom Reese uses to his advantage. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything.
Opening narration:
Harold Finch: "You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know because I built it. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people, people like you. Crimes the government considered "irrelevant." They wouldn't act, so I decided I would. But I needed a partner, someone with the skills to intervene. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us, but victim or perpetrator, if your number's up... we'll find you."
Not available on Hulu, you get redirected to the official site at CBS (which is hopefully not country-blocked *fingers crossed*).
Now, what I find so interesting about this show is how it's a little bit of a different twist on the whole "good" vigilante tale. Reese is a pretty tortured guy, no doubt about it, but he's also a good guy and he seems to be on a serious mission to redeem himself for his past sins by trying to save as many people as he can.
Finch is also an interesting mystery: obviously something physically traumatic has happened to him at some point (Michael Emerson does an excellent job in portraying that in subtle ways, more than even Finch's limping gait, he turns his upper body, not just his head, and he just looks like somebody who's suffered some serious neck/back injuries, it's sort of shocking to see Finch in flashbacks moving about freely). But beyond that, what would drive a person to create something like the Machine, a computer system designed to compile and process the enormous amount of data out there on every one of us to try to predict violent crimes before they occur? There's a lot of rich backstory for both Reese and Finch to that they've yet to touch on. ;)
Here's when the two of them meet. Reese has hit bottom, homeless, alcoholic and about 3 steps away from total oblivion (and unfortunately he also looks rather like he's undercover in a bad costume, o_O but just try to ignore the oddly fake looking Wig And Beard Of Down On His Luck-ness ;) ).
"What were you?" is the scene between Reese and Detective Carter that leads into this one if you're interested in seeing it. Otherwise, jump right to Reese and Finch's meeting that sets up the basic premise of the show. ;)
The Machine itself turned out to be an unexpected "third" character on Team Good Guy Vigilante. :P ;) You don't ever see or hear from the Machine, per se, other than to see through "its" many eyes, through surveillance cameras and such. In the top poster, you can see the Machine's sort of targeting square. As it tracks people through surveillance footage, it tags them with a white square as it's compiling information on them. Finch and Reese have yellow squares. Bad guys who are imminent threats get red squares. For something that we really have very little contact with, I find that a hint of personality comes through and I kinda dig it! ;)
Learn more about the Machine in this flashback with Mr. Finch and his partner Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen, who played Goodwin in Lost if it looks familiar to see the two of them together in a scene ;) )...
I find Finch's comments that the Machine "has an instinct for self-preservation" and "shhh, it can hear you" to be extremely intriguing. Is the Machine a friendlier (or not? O_O ;) ) version of Skynet, perhaps? Does access to SO much information begin to create a sort of artificial intelligence? What happens if the Machine ever decides that instead of turning over the Social Security number (which is "the number" that Finch often mentions getting) of a person of interest for Finch and Reese to investigate, it decides to take matters into its own (cyber)hands? O_O Or will it always defer to Finch, its "System Admin?" Finch makes the statement that the Machine is unhackable. Hopefully not unhackable in the same way that the Titanic was unsinkable. O_O I'm interested to see how they're going to go with this, whether the Machine will take on further personality or will remain merely an inanimate tool.
This next spot is a MASSIVE SPOILER for the ending of the mid-season cliffhanger, 1x10 "Number Crunch." Normally I wouldn't give you the end of an episode but, well, this was one of the things that hooked me, what can I say? This leads directly into 1x11 "Super" and shows the moment when Detective Carter, who has been chasing both of them through the previous 9 episodes, makes a pivotal decision. It also has some great character moments between Finch and Reese, IMO. ;)
Lastly, here's an example of Reese doing that thing that he does so well... ;) Embedding disabled, sorry, so you have to hope over to YT to see The Elevator Scene. ;)
And to conclude, here are the fanvids I mentioned at the start:
1. "Badass John Reese" by xSoppySofax aka benlinusisagoodguy at LVI ;)
Showing John at his best and most kick-butt! Language warning liek woah, though, because Kanye is Very Free with the f-word and its various friends. O_O ;)
2. "You don't know a thing about me" by xSoppySofax (NOTE: has quite a few quick black flashes if you're sensitive to that.)
A short little vidlette showcasing Reese and Zoe, who was a person of interest. I'm bummed that I missed Zoe's first episode but at least that let me see a bit of their chemistry. (And SPOILER: she does reappear briefly in a later episode, yay! ;) )
3. "Person of Interest | Cracks" by GreysALIASAnatomy aka MyCatz2 at LVI ;) (NOTE: contains a lot of quick, flashy editing if you're sensitive to that.)
This is the vid that finally tipped me over into wanting to know what was going on here, darn it, lol! ;) I also fell in love with the song enough that I went and bought the entire album of remixes for it (PLEASE TO TAKE NOTE, MUSIC COPYRIGHT HOLDERS. I BOUGHT YOUR MUSIC SOLELY BECAUSE OF HEARING IT IN A FANVID. *points to the note about free advertisement above* ;) ).
Anyway, hope you'll give this one a try if you haven't already! Thanks for reading and sharing in my fangirly squee! :D ♥♥♥!!!
