I got the chance to catch the first 3 episodes of "Alcatraz" (the 2 hour pilot and the episode after that) and I enjoyed it. Is anybody else watching?

From executive producer J.J. Abrams (FRINGE, “Lost,” “Star Trek,” and the recent blockbuster “Super 8”) comes ALCATRAZ, a thrilling new series that follows a unique trio investigating the mystifying reappearance of 302 of Alcatraz’s most notorious prisoners and guards, 50 years after they vanished.
When San Francisco Police Department DET. REBECCA MADSEN (Sarah Jones) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a seemingly impossible suspect: JACK SYLVANE (guest star Jeffrey Pierce), an Alcatraz inmate who died over 30 years ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, RAY ARCHER (Robert Forster), were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued. When the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent EMERSON HAUSER (Sam Neill) tries to impede her investigation, she becomes doggedly committed to it.
Madsen finds herself working with an unlikely partner, Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast DR. DIEGO “DOC” SOTO (Jorge Garcia), to help piece together the inexplicable sequence of events. The two discover that Sylvane is not only alive, but he’s loose on the streets of San Francisco, exacting decades-old revenge and leaving bodies in his wake. And strangely, he hasn’t aged a day since 1963, when Alcatraz was ruled by the iron-fisted WARDEN EDWIN JAMES (Jonny Coyne) and the sadistic ASSOCIATE WARDEN E.B. TILLER (Jason Butler Harner).
Detective Madsen and Soto must team with Hauser and his associate, LUCY BANERJEE (Parminder Nagra), to stop Sylvane’s vengeful killing spree. By delving into Alcatraz history, government cover-ups and Rebecca’s own heritage, the team will ultimately discover that Sylvane is only a small part of a much larger, more sinister present-day threat. Because even though he may be the first, it quickly becomes clear that Sylvane won’t be the last to reappear from Alcatraz.
During the course of the investigation, Madsen and Soto will learn that Hauser has been awaiting the prisoners’ return for nearly 50 years. Soto will witness his life’s work – the history of Alcatraz – come alive, while he and Madsen fight to keep the country safe from history’s most dangerous criminals.

I liked Rebecca and Doc's chemistry, I could definitely ship 'em *pause for shocked gasps because I NEVAH ship characters, right?* :P but I also enjoy them as friends. ♥!
It doesn't hurt that Rebecca occasionally reminds me of Starbuck (probably it's the hair most of all but still... ;) ). It's going to take a lot for me not to think of Doc as a version of Hurley (he SO very carefully does not say "dude" at any time but I really kept hoping he would, lol ;) ) but, well, that's not a bad thing to me since I love Hurley! ;)

Now, Jack Sylvane ended up being a source of conflicting feelings for me. At various points in the pilot, I thought he was going to end up as a main character working with the good guys, a potential romantic lead for Rebecca, AND an irredeemable bad guy. The bottom line is... I dunno. He did some pretty bad guy things in the pilot yet every time I get a glimpse of him, I'm all "Yay!" *conflicted!fangirl is conflicted* I guess it will mainly depend on where the show takes him. If they start redeeming him, he'll go into the sort of anti-hero section of my fangirl heart. If they don't and he stays bad, he'll go into the "villains I don't necessary want to see win but darned if I don't still like 'em anyway" section. ;) He definitely has the potential to go either way, so I'm interested in seeing how that plays out.
And I definitely am feeling the shippy Rebecca/Jack vibes. But you knew that already, right? ;)
Anyway, if you're interested in checking this show out, the eps can currently be seen depending on country blocking, of course, grr) free and legal at:
Hulu
Fox's official site
Get 'em while they're hot! ;) They're counting them as 3 eps and Hulu is only showing 5 eps at one time, so they'll start falling off the schedule in a couple of weeks.
In the meanwhile, if you're looking for a show comm, please pop over to
alcatraz_on_fox and have a look about. It's just setting up shop but there are already a few icon posts, discussions and the like showing up. The more, the merrier makes it a party, after all! ;)

Date: 2012-01-26 11:27 pm (UTC)Anyway, that perplexes me that Fox is holding the ep back 8 days like that, especially since it IS on the free Hulu already. :S What sort of sense does that make? Why not make sure people can see the episode right away if they want to? *shakes head* I'm never going to understand the reasoning these places have for not trying to take advantage of all of the viewers that want to see their show!
*hugs* ♥!

Date: 2012-01-27 12:28 am (UTC)I seriously started watching this yesterday, and it's fantastic so far. I'm hoping it continues to be awesome and doesn't fall a bit flat after a few episodes as some shows do; right now it looks like they might do a different prisoner every week, and I'm afraid that would get old fairly quickly, so I'm interested to see how they'll keep it fresh and not too serial. I'm so flipping excited! :D

Date: 2012-01-27 12:30 am (UTC)I don't know why FOX does that either. Or any of the things it does. It used to be just their super popular shows were held for 8 days and the new ones you could see 24 hours later. Of course, I've never understood why FOX doesn't show eps of American Idol. ABC and NBC air next day of Dancing with the Stars and The Biggest Loser. Don't know why FOX wouldn't air their biggest cash cow.

Date: 2012-01-27 06:26 am (UTC)I'm beginning to despair that we'll ever see the TV and movie industries get with the times and start taking advantage of all of the ways people want to view their entertainment. They complain so much about how piracy is taking money away from them, yet they themselves cut off huge scores of potential customers by either country-blocking them or by just completely failing to serve them in some other way. Fandom is global now but I swear the practices of how they decide where and when to air their products is coming from back when there were only 3 channels in existence! :S

Date: 2012-01-27 08:38 am (UTC)I have to say, though, this looooooong wait for Sherlock's second series is making me really appreciate that at least BBC America has been getting DW on the same day. Sherlock not only has aired in the UK at the beginning of this month but it's already out on DVD as of the end of this month! PBS isn't showing it here until May and then we don't get our region's DVD until July! That's just ridiculous to me, what possible good does it do to hold it back from the US fans like that??? *tears out hair slightly*
I've managed to hang onto my resolve to not download anything anymore but dang it, they have NOT made it easy. Blocking countries or holding back the release like that only encourages piracy, how can they not see that? If they'd make it available worldwide at the same time, then a huge chunk of downloading would instead go to watching/buying it legally. Duh. *smacks whoever makes these dumb rules with a rubber chicken* Gr.
[/end feisty] :P ;)

Date: 2012-01-28 09:39 am (UTC)I could understand it to an extent when there were only hard copies, as shipping large amounts of something that might not sell would be bad business, but given they now have the digital option.....
it just makes no sense at all. For example, did you know Fright Night is STILL not out over here?

Date: 2012-01-29 03:28 am (UTC)Of course, the laws seem to agree that the Internet is a series of tubes (http://boingboing.net/2006/07/02/sen-stevens-hilariou.html) so you can't just have movies and TV shows shooting all over the world at the same time, clogging up the tubes. *EPIC DUMBSTRUCK FACE*
The Internet is a series of tubes as an awesome techno song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cZC67wXUTs), just for the LOLZ. ;)
Man, that really sucks that Fright Night still isn't out there! I just don't understand that way of thinking, it's never going to make sense to me. *shakes head*

Date: 2012-01-29 03:43 am (UTC)I admit I have downloaded stuff that was not always legal, but only either as a sample before buying the boxset of DVD's (which I've done many times and as a result ended up buying things I would NOT have bought otherwise), or because the film/TV show is not available on DVD at all.
There's just no excuse for not offering downloads these days, no matter what the companies concerned might say.
If the pirates can get a blu-ray quality copy out there for download the same day it's released, why the hell can't the companies actually releasing it do the same thing? They've already created it, making a digital copy available would cost them next to nothing and could earn them a fortune.
Case in point; Recovery. A brilliant TV movie with DT, made a few years ago now and never released on DVD. I kn ow many, many fans who desperately want a good copy and would be happy to pay for it.
Just try asking them why it isn't available though. I did, and got bounced round 4 different email addresses before hitting a brick wall.
So yes, I found a less than legal copy, because I wanted to see it. I would have happily paid for one, but they wouldn't let me. How can they then stamp their little feet when I go elsewhere?

Both of those are just so much THIS. It boggles my mind that, considering the entire point of their business is to be a success and have tons of viewers and sell lots of merchandise... they refuse to let their product be seen or sold simply on the basis of where somebody lives! :S
That system of thinking is completely outdated, IMO. The Internet makes us a single global community. We want to *squee* with each other at the same time when something comes out, not months later if at all! If they don't provide people with a legal means to do that, how can they be surprised when people take alternate methods then? If somebody wants to see your product that badly, then show it to them on the same terms you're showing it to other people! If they want to buy it, let them! That shouldn't be that difficult of a concept, should it?
*boggled face*
