Balancing Act ch8 and various updates!

mistojen's for beta-ing (and, you know, probably cookies and milk and a few games of Monopoly ;) ) so will hopefully be able to be posted soon! :D
Also, as you've probably heard by now, there's a lot of rumbling that LJ may go under. :S I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be bought out and thus continue uninterrupted. Really, anything else is pretty unthinkable to me! *clings desperately to LJ* I don't know what I'd do without all of my awesome LJ friends and all the wonderful comms! O_O *hides behind the couch rather than think about that*
However, just in case I've started archiving my entries. There are several different ways to do that but since I didn't want to install a program on my computer or take a new account with a different service and copy my entries over to it (and thus losing friend's locking and privating for entries, making everything public), I've chosen to copy/paste them one at a time into Word. Yes, I'm insane. ;) But even though it's laborious, at least I'll have a copy of everything on my computer without giving an unknown program access to my LJ account ('cause I'm paranoid that way ;) ) or turning everything public. ;) Hey, I started late yesterday and managed to get 2006 and 2007 done, so I'm styling pretty good, I'd say. ;) Hopefully I'll finish up with 2008 and the bit of 2009 today. ;)
I lost my first vid ("Ethan's Wonderful World") to YouTube's copyright violation today but that's to be expected with the way vids are dropping on all sides these days. :( I really expect YouTube to clear out all of their fanvids before terribly long. :( Hopefully one day the music and tv/movie industries will see vids as free advertisement for their products, not as something to try to blow up with a giant bazooka! :( *considers making an icon that says "Don't blow up my vids with a giant bazooka, Music and TV/Movie Industries!" until she realizes that'll be too much to fit on an icon* *considers making it a banner instead* ;)
Anyway, I'm trying to catch up with answering my comments today and hopefully I'll have "BA's" conclusion ready to be posted soon! *throws confetti and jumps into Nine's arms ala Rose in my mood theme* ;)

Hopefully you'll be able to find "Fighter's Fugitive!" *fingers crossed* But you might want to go ahead and rip it from YouTube so that you'll at least have a copy of it, even if the quality won't be as good as the original. Both Media Converter (http://www.mediaconverter.org/index.php) and Zamzar (http://www.zamzar.com/) work fairly well. I think I've mentioned before adding &fmt=18 to the end of your link to try and rip a higher quality version. Sometimes that seems to help! ;)

I've come across quite a few ways that you can backup your LJ but I didn't want to give an unknown program access to my LJ account and all my info and such ('cause I'm paranoid, lol! ;) ). So I literally have been just going entry by entry, copy/pasting them one at a time into Word documents. It's rather a time-consuming chore, true, but at least then I can keep all the comments and any pics and graphics and icons and all that. ;)

Date: 2009-01-09 03:26 pm (UTC)I know of both Media Converter and Zamzar, but I tried it once with CoLM and sometimes it would get "stuck" on a scene and it was really, quite choppy. :( But, I'll still try it with Fighter's Fugitive and hope it won't happen! *crosses fingers*
As for your vids, if Youtube's issue was with the music, you can always "swap audio" so the video will go back up, and then rip the video, and re-add the music with WMM or Vegas. It's a hassle, but it might work! :)
Oi! I was considering doing that, but it'll take FAR too long! :( The LJ community sent out the post in the LJ_news thingy and said that earlier reports of what was going on was a exaggerated, so, you know, hopefully nothing will happen (and you can take a break from the tedious backing-files-up process!) :D

I'm just taking my time with it, then I figure once I'm up to date, it won't be such a bad thing to keep up with it. *fingers crossed* ;)
I'm definitely hoping that the news of LJ's death was greatly exaggerated and that this will all just be for my own benefit and not really needed! ;)

I'm sorry that you lost your vid :( They've taken down a total of seven of mine, I think, at this point...in the last two months. Most of them I have backups for thanks to my flist, but there's still a few I'm missing and don't know if I'll ever get back. *sigh*
I'm gonna be moving to InsaneJournal within the next couple of months, anyway, to be honest. My paid LJ will be up and I'm not paying for another, not after all the fail customer service they've been displaying. I only pay for my LJ so I can have the extra icons and InsaneJournal gives you a hundred of them for free. Plus, with Open ID I can still reply with my IJ to people's LJs, so really there's no reason for me to stick with LJ when they might be folding, anyway. I've been waiting for it to happen since Brad left, honestly...I've been here a loooong while and it's been a long time coming, sadly.

Date: 2009-01-09 07:00 am (UTC)So don't give up on that vidding career just yet! ;) When I first came in at LVI, there were practically NO vidding hosts at all. You either had to have your own website and host them yourself or you had to use Yousendit which expired after 7 days. LVI first tried to host vids themselves but that quickly exceeded its bandwidth, even WITH restricting vids to no larger than 10MB! O_O (Originally it wasn't a Council Pick that your vid was judge for, it was whether or not it was going to be put on site and hosted! So talk about strict criteria, eep! The poor original Council had some really tough work to do! O_O )
I just wish that all of these industries would realize how much of an asset their fans can be, not come after us with giant fly swatters! O_O ;)

I respect your wish not to use any new programs, but in case you change your mind, I use LJarchive and it works great.

Ooo, I'm glad to find somebody who uses LJarchive! I'm not clear on a few things on it (though of course I've read about so many different backup methods and programs I may be confusing it by now *eyeroll* ;) ). Is there any way to actually read back in the archive on your computer or do you have to find some web place to upload it to after exporting it from LJ? And does it take the comments with it or just the entries themselves? What if the entry has pictures in it like a picspam? And what about the icon used to post it as well as the icons in the comments?

- Yes, you can read your entries - you just open the file and you can browse through everything. The comments are included. Pictures and entry icons are included, but not icons for comments, for some reason (this makes me sad). As far as I can see the filters are gone, all those posts revert to friends-only. It's not an issue for back-up, but if you want to reupload entries to another journaling service at some point, that's good to remember.
